This exhibition is organized by the curators of the contemporary art galleries of Marylhurst University, Reed College and Lewis and Clark College. It will be presented in concurrent exhibitions at Marylhurst University and Lewis and Clark.
The exhibition will present an overview of work by Oregon artist Michael Knutson. It will include approximately 40 abstract paintings and 16 drawings produced from the early 1980s to 2006. Many of Knutson's paintings are very large, which led to the decision to present the exhibition at two locations – Marylhurst University and Lewis and Clark College.
There will be a full color catalogue with an introduction by Terri Hopkins and essays by Stephanie Snyder and Linda Brady Tesner.
This project is funded in part through support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Oregon Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Reed College, Marylhurst University and Lewis and Clark College.
About the Artist
Michael Knutson is an important Oregon artist and recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant and the Betty Bowen Memorial Special Recognition Award. He has exhibited his work widely in exhibitions at museums (Portland Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery of the University of Washington, Tacoma Art Museum), and college and university galleries.
Knutson received his BFA from the University of Washington and his MFA from Yale University. Knutson has served on the West Side Light Rail Tri-Met Art Advisory Committee and the Portland Center for the Visual Arts Exhibition Committee. Since 1982, Knutson has been a Professor of Art at Reed College. He is a member of Blackfish Gallery in Portland, Oregon.
