Yellow Ribbon Program Information

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.

Only students who are entitled to the maximum benefit rate (100% benefit) under the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) are eligible to receive funding under the Yellow Ribbon Program. Additionally, Yellow Ribbon Program funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, which means there is the potential for eligible students not to receive funds under this program.

With Marylhurst University's Military Tuition Discount, we are meeting our Veteran students’ financial needs without participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Marylhurst offers a 20% Military Tuition Discount to students who are either currently serving on active duty, who have been honorably discharged from active duty in any branch of the United States Armed Forces, or are National Guard & Reserve personnel who have been federally mobilized for more than 30 days for purposes other than training. Any eligible student can apply for this discount, even if a student is also receiving benefits under the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Here are some examples of how tuition can be covered in full using your Post 9/11 VA benefits and the Marylhurst University Military Tuition Discount:

Example #1 – For an undergraduate student who attends school full-time (12 credits) at Marylhurst University and is eligible to receive 100% benefit from Post 9/11 GI Bill:

Marylhurst University’s undergraduate tuition charges for 12 credits in a term (Fall 2009 through Spring 2010) = $4,512 ($376/credit).

VA will pay a max of $376 per credit or $4,512 per term.

If the student is receiving Marylhurst's Military Discount, his/her tuition would be discounted to $3,610 which means the student’s tuition charges would be covered in full by his/her VA benefits and Military Tuition Discount.

Example #2 – For an undergraduate student who attends school full-time (12 credits) at Marylhurst University and is eligible to receive 80% benefit from the Post 9/11 GI Bill (this student is not eligible for benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program):

Marylhurst University’s undergraduate tuition charges for 12 credits in a term (Fall 2009 through Spring 2010) = $4,512

VA will pay 80% of this student’s tuition charges or $3,610.

If the student also received Marylhurst’s Military Tuition Discount, his/her tuition would be discounted to $3,610 and his/her tuition would be covered in full through the combination of VA benefits and the Military Tuition Discount.

Example #3 – For a graduate student who attends school full-time (9 credits) at Marylhurst University and is eligible to receive 100% benefit from Post 9/11 GI Bill:

Marylhurst University’s graduate tuition charges for 9 credits in a term (Fall 2009 through Spring 2010) = $4,356 ($484/credit).

VA will pay a max of $438 per credit or $3,942 per term.

If the student is receiving Marylhurst's Military Discount, his/her tuition will be discounted to $3,485 which means the student’s tuition charges would be covered in full by his/her VA benefits and Military Tuition Discount.
