About

The Creative Arts Day Camp is inspired by the words of a song written by a group of music therapy clients.

All of us are unique
Necessary in our own way ...
Each of us can be epic individuals, diverse, yet equal.

This year, the camp is created around a pirate theme. Based upon this theme, campers will participate in art, music, movement and drama experiences that reinforce the ideal of achieving one's maximum potential. All activities are built around success, for it is through successful experience that children grow.

History

The Creative Arts Day Camp at Marylhurst University was founded in 2007 by former faculty member Lillieth Grand, MS, MT-BC. The camp provides practical experience for Marylhurst music and art therapy students. More importantly, the camp responds to the needs of area families challenged to find fun day camp opportunities for their children with special needs along with their typically developing siblings.

Who are our counselors?

Our counselors are students in the Marylhurst music therapy and art therapy counseling programs. Each room is supervised by experienced professional music and art therapists. A therapeutic recreation specialist is also on staff to facilitate creative play and exercise. All are trained in CPR and first aid. Music therapy students and local Girl Scouts act as volunteer escorts to ensure the safety of all campers.

What are the Creative Arts?

Creative arts is a term to encompass music, dance, poetry, visual arts and drama. At this camp, all of these arts will be utilized to help the campers develop social, motor, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, sensory and creative skills.

What is Music Therapy?

A word about assistance

Our ratio is 3 campers to 1 adult leader. We are not able to provide interpreters or aides. If your child requires a 1:1 aide at school, they will require one here as well. If you are unable to provide a necessary aide for your child, please contact us anyway. We do not have a registered nurse on site. We are accustomed to assisting clients who utilize wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. All areas of campus that the camp will utilize are wheelchair accessible.

What if your child is not disabled?

All children grades 1 to 6 are welcome! What a wonderful experience it will be for typical children to have friends who are special. And, the typical peers can act as models for our campers who have special needs. This is also a great opportunity for siblings to attend a camp together. Register two children from the same family and save $10.

Cost

The cost is $80 per camper ($150 for two). This cost includes one t-shirt, snacks, use of all art, recreation and music supplies, and the family awards picnic on Saturday, July 19. Scholarships may be available based on financial need.

Registration is limited and based on a first-come, first-serve basis.
