Bachelor of Music in PerformanceThe Bachelor of Music degree is the initial professional degree in music. It is designed for the student who wishes to specialize in one aspect of music. Graduates will demonstrate competence in their field of study, acquire advanced musicianship skills, obtain broad knowledge of musical language and literature and develop teaching skills. The Performance MajorThe Bachelor of Music in Performance provides rigorous musical training to prepare students for a performance and/or private teaching career. Students may choose a concentration in:
Students with other performing concentrations are encouraged to pursue the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. Double Concentration in Performance and PedagogyPiano and voice students who wish to pursue a double concentration in performance and pedagogy may do so by pursuing the pedagogy concentration with six additional credits in the applied area and three additional credits in the ensemble area. About the Marylhurst Music Core Performance FoundationPerform solo and ensemble undergraduate repertoire on a primary instrument or voice to an advanced level. Musical LiteracyAcquire knowledge about solo and ensemble literature of the primary instrument or voice. Teaching MethodsAcquire pedagogical methods and materials to conduct instruction of the primary instrument or voice to a broad range of students. Integration of ScienceUnderstand how the mechanics of the human body relate to musical performance and teaching. Language SkillsVoice concentration students will be able to perform in several languages and demonstrate comprehension of basic vocabulary in those languages. Advanced PedagogyPedagogy concentration students will further develop pedagogical skills, understand how human learning and development relate to musical teaching and acquire basic business skills to be successfully self-employed. Career PathsBuilding a career as a professional musician demands dedication, exhaustive training, practice and a clear understanding of the business of music. There are few full-time positions today for performing musicians, and positions that are available are highly competitive. Yet many musicians create careers by working independently, performing and teaching. The Bachelor of Music in Performance helps prepare students to chart these waters. Graduates are also prepared for further music study at the master's level. Students who choose the pedagogy concentrations may pursue graduate-level study in choral education, performance, pedagogy or a Master of Arts in Teaching. | |||||||
