What is the Liberal Arts Core?At Marylhurst, the liberal arts are considered the most crucial aspects of higher education. The Liberal Arts Core, required for all bachelors degree-seeking students, encompasses four areas of learning: Life and Learning Skills Through these focus areas, you will enhance your capacity for working with diverse populations and views. You will develop curiosity and a love of inquiry, critical thinking, breadth of perspective and insight and a foundation for life-long learning. Core CoursesAcademic Learning: Discovery and PracticeThis course introduces students to the culture of Marylhurst University and to the significance of the University's focus on outcome-based, liberal arts and adult learning. Students consider and apply different perspectives about learning as they plan for and reflect on their educational goals. Career Transitions & MAP Completion SeminarTaken near the end of one's studies, this course provides a collaborative environment in which students review and synthesize their learning and plan for the future. Career transition may be part of completing a liberal arts degree at Marylhurst University. This course provides an overview of career development theory and job-seeking skills. Students complete a skills-based resume and career action plan and explore new ways to look at transferable skills through the lens of a college education. Students also review, update and submit their final Marylhurst Academic Portfolio (MAP). Senior SeminarIn the Senior Seminar, students analyze ways in which their chosen academic discipline has shaped society. They examine how different disciplinary perspectives influence the learning process. The Senior Seminar encourages students to explore the possibilities and limitations for becoming agents of ethical action after graduating from Marylhurst. | |||||||
