BA in Interdisciplinary StudiesThe BA in Interdisciplinary Studies program is designed for highly motivated, independent students who want an education tailored to meet individual needs. In this program, students create a personal academic plan around a concentration of choice, combining two or more disciplines such as communication and psychology, or writing and religious studies. Working with an advisor, each student develops a unique curriculum that both fulfills Marylhurst's degree requirements and supports professional and personal life goals. Advisors assist students in utilizing relevant transfer credits from other accredited colleges or universities, as well as college-level learning from life experience. Through Marylhurst's Prior Learning Assessment program, students may earn up to 45 credits (one year) toward a bachelor's degree. More About Prior Learning Assessment Learning OutcomesStudents who major in Interdisciplinary Studies will: Write a mission statement that reflects personal, academic, career and life goals; Develop a plan for attaining life objectives and take responsibility for monitoring, evaluating and updating that plan; Articulate and apply theories, methods and critical perspectives from at least two academic disciplines; Demonstrate the common thread connecting these disciplines; Analyze the similarities and differences between the ways knowledge is constructed and used in the disciplines studied; Acquire strong research and writing skills; and Examine and discuss values gained through education and how such values can impact community through personal, civic, professional or scholarly life. Outstanding FacultyMarylhurst faculty are selected for their excellence as teachers, as well as for their academic and professional achievements. Most instructors are practicing professionals in their fields of expertise. This ensures students receive an education that prepares them for today's workplace, whether they are combining studies in science and public policy, music and art, or literature and language. Career PathsSome students pursue an interdisciplinary degree for personal fulfillment and remain in their current lines of work. Others start their own businesses in fields as varied as financial planning, performing arts management or human resources consulting. Still others launch new careers, as freelancers or employees in design, education and high-tech industries. The BA in Interdisciplinary Studies prepares students for graduate-level studies in diverse fields such as English, psychology, ministry and the environmental sciences, as well as interdisciplinary graduate programs such as law, art therapy or a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies. | |||||||
