BA in Human Studies
As we are constantly evolving and being changed by the environments in which we live, Marylhurst offers a unique program that explores what it means to be "human."
The Bachelor of Arts in Human Studies program draws upon a number of disciplines including psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, ethics, communication and environmental science. Students explore connections among human and non-human systems and learn how these systems organize, relate and evolve.
Graduates leave Marylhurst with an intellectual awareness of relationships with the self and with others enabling them to further personal, educational and professional goals.

Learning Outcomes
Students who major in Human Studies will
- Explore the ways in which humans learn, adapt and develop over the life course;
- Discover the dynamic interconnections between mind, body and spirit;
- Examine perennial and contemporary issues related to human experience;
- Understand the complex relationships between individual, social, cultural, ecological, spiritual and historical contexts; and
- Enact the principles of human studies through an internship or research project.
The Curriculum
The Human Studies program centers upon six core courses. These classes explore a range of perspectives on the relationships that affect human behavior.
Students also select from a series of required courses and related electives, creating a curriculum that meets personal goals. Toward the end of their studies, all students complete an internship or research project, putting learning into meaningful practice.

Human Studies graduates often go on to work in the helping professions, the social services, consulting, activism, marketing and education. They are well prepared for graduate work in such fields as social work, psychology, education, rehabilitation, art therapy and interdisciplinary studies.
