Excellence in TeachingNominations for Marylhurst University's Excellence in Academic Service and Teaching Award are submitted by students and colleagues. The Faculty Development Committee reviews nominations and makes recommendations to the Provost. 2009 RecipientsLeon Abbott, Business & Management, Accelerated Online Program"Dr. Abbott challenges his students to think outside of the box, to keep an open mind, and to respect the opinions of others even when we may not agree with those opinions. Dr. Abbott reminded me that business ethics is not just about individual personal ethics, but also about how personal moral dilemmas affect an individuals ability to function in the world of business." Sheila OConnell-Roussell, Religious Studies"Dr. Sheila continually engages in new research. She always shares what she is learning and discovering with her students. Her enthusaism for scripture and exegesis is amazing. She always comes to class with well prepared powerpoints to share with her students, yet she is willing to follow the energy of the group and to discuss what what the students need to learn about. Ive been impressed on numerous occassions at the sheer depth of her knowledge. She engages students in the learning process by developing relationships with us. We know that she wants us to learn and that she cares about us as individuals." Emily Ross, Music Therapy"Emily Ross makes learning material fun, interesting, interactive and useful. Thats hard to say about a lot of professors. She also has an education background which makes her classes seem so much more comprehensible then other music teachers. Emily Ross is an amazing professor and an amazing music therapist." Sarah Slayton, Art Therapy Counseling"Sarah has high expectations of her students, and inspires us to reach them. She is excellent at asking questions that make us think. She gives great feedback, very thorough and kindly presented. She notices where we need to gain skill and where we are doing great, and says so. Her knowledge of art therapy is broad and she is very insightful about clients and helpful with case histories. She is extremely organized and works hard to see that school goes well for each of us."
