ESOL Endorsement Program

The ESOL Endorsement program is designed for licensed teachers. Learn alongside peers in small, seminar-style classes taught by expert faculty.

Upon completion of this program, educators will be able to:

  • Utilize research-based strategies and assessment tools to inform instruction,
  • Meet the needs of individual learners, and
  • Understand issues related to effective ESOL instruction.

Focus Areas

Depending on the applicant's interest and teaching level, the educator may focus in:

  • Early Childhood and Elementary
  • Middle School and High School

Curriculum

All ESOL Endorsement candidates take the following courses:

Language & Language Development
An introduction to theories of language acquisition and applications to the classroom.

Culturally Proficient Instruction
Explore the development of proficiency in cultural understanding and methods for applying these principles to instruction.

Materials, Strategies & Technologies for Teaching ELL in the Mainstream Classroom
Learn to choose appropriate instructional strategies while expanding the English Language Learner's production and comprehension of spoken English.

Culture & Diversity Considerations
Examine dimensions of culture, categories of social diversity and the school-related dilemmas of stigmatized social groups.

Second Language Methodology
Gain a foundation for second language instruction, including formal language assessments and theory and history of instructional methods and strategies.

Leadership: ESOL Professional in the School & Community
Research the legal, historical and cultural issues related to English as a Second Language in Oregon, as well as in the United States.

Descriptive Linguistics & Exploration of
English Language Form & Function

Identify aspects of language: sound system, grammar system, lexicon, language functions and apply this knowledge to supporting language development and direct teaching about language.

Literacy Issues
Expand instructional strategies to promote literacy development among English Language Learners.

Practicum
A position-embedded experience to apply pedagogy, diagnostics, assessment and leadership knowledge skills.

Elective
Choose an elective in bilingual methods, special education issues or family, community & society.
