BA in Cultural StudiesIn the Cultural Studies program at Marylhurst, students explore how social, political, ethical and economic issues of the present are shaped by the past and how our study of the past is influenced by the present. Cultural Studies is much more than cultural appreciation; it is the interdisciplinary study of popular culture, historical identity, politics, film, ethnicity, gender, technology, media and other consequential issues. The ProgramIn addition to required coursework, the curriculum incorporates a concentration and a senior paper. Required Core CoursesCore courses introduce students to cultural studies' theoretical and practical approaches as well as its historical and philosophical background. The core courses are: Introduction to Cultural Studies ConcentrationsStudents can create an individualized plan of concentration in the Cultural Studies program, or choose from these concentrations:
Elective CoursesWorking with an advisor, students customize their degree by creating a program of courses to support personal and professional goals. Senior PaperThe senior paper prepares students to apply acquired theoretical knowledge to a research project. Career PathsIn this program, students gain critical thinking and communication skills, useful in any work environment. Graduates will be positioned to make significant contributions in fields that require practical sensitivity to cultural differences such as international policy and business, community organization and activism, education and journalism.
