Frequently Asked Questions

What careers are available to trained mediators?

Many mediators establish private practices, particularly if they can couple negotiation skills with extensive knowledge of a specialty area such as construction, discrimination, domestic relations, health care, insurance, landlord-tenant rights or real estate.

Others find employment as mediators with state and local governments, corporations or community mediation centers.

Of course, conflict resolution is a skill valued by all employers, in any job setting.

What education is needed to become a mediator?

Presently, the State of Oregon has minimal requirements for mediators. Essentially, a 40-hour basic training, followed by mentoring from an established mediator meets the state requirements. Additional training may be required to become a mediator in a specialty area.

What are the benefits of completing Marylhurst's Certificate in Conflict Resolution & Mediation?

In addition to completing six upper-division university courses designed to develop your negotiation skills, the Marylhurst program also requires students to complete a final project or internship, to put classroom learning into practice.

Marylhurst has partnerships with Clackamas County Dispute Resolutions Services and Multnomah County Court, providing apprenticeships in community, neighborhood and court mediation.

As a Marylhurst University student/alum, you can join SOLUTIONS, an organization designed to help you further develop your mediation skills and to network with individuals and organizations.

Finally, you may apply these 20 credits towards a Marylhurst bachelor's degree, choosing from majors such as communication studies, business and leadership, or human studies.
