Success StoriesWe Are MarylhurstWe are part of our life experiences and our life experiences are part of us. The Marylhurst experience does not stop at graduation nor pause for other life experiences. The adventure is a continuum of ongoing adventures in life. My mentor Karri provided invaluable information for me to discover myself, my talents, areas needing improvement and tools that I use to this day in my new job as a Career Transition Specialist for the Angell Job Corps Center in Yachats, OR. I would encourage all new students and graduates to involve themselves in the mentoring program either as a mentee or as a mentor. To use something learned in my Communication and Rhythm class, compare the mentoring program to a drum circle where the purpose of the drum circle is to support each others voice and provide a platform for self expression. It is a safe place to ask questions, discuss ideas and seek answers. The amount of time Karri and I spent together was not extensive, but it was quality time building trust, providing new knowledge for both parties and new understandings on how to approach issues in each other's life. "We are Marylhurst" is a community of like mindedness committed to seeking knowledge, truth, self awareness and building relationships that endure time, distance and even disagreements. These are the qualities that the Marylhurst mentoring program offers to all who dare to involve themselves in its process. Become part of the process that changes lives. Stan Esler, BA Interdisciplinary Studies My Mentoring StoryWhen I met my mentor, John, I needed to find out what I really wanted to do in the future, and I needed to find someone who could lead me to the next step. I remember the first day that I met John. It was in a coffee shop and I, a foreign student in America, did not know what I was supposed to do with my mentor. Furthermore, I was not aggressive enough to network with people. Despite my worries, John made me feel comfortable, and I was able to talk about myself, about what is important to me and my hidden hopes. In addition, he encouraged me to meet and communicate with many experts. By asking me some questions that made me set a clear goal for my future, John helped me get some ideas of what I would really like to do. I was interested in the hospitality industry, such as hotels, conventions and traveling. John had been working in the hospitality business for years and had professional experience. He gave me many opportunities to connect and communicate with professionals. In addition, as I had informational interviews or met with professionals, he checked back with me on how it went. Meeting with many experts brought me to have a broad experience. If you are feeling lost for your future, need some help to expand networking, or need professional guidance, I strongly recommend the mentoring program. I feel that mentors are like my adulthood parents who guide me to go on the right track while giving me tools to lead myself as well. Doyeun Kim, BA Business & Leadership | |||||||
