The Confounding ConflictMarch 03 - 31, 2010Streff Gallery, Shoen Library Artist Jessica Burke's body of work for this exhibition is an exploration of the influence of popular culture on gender. The work is heavily influenced by the theoretical idea that all gender is a cultural construction. To this end, a montage of layered objects, patterns and figures construct a cerebral space that reflects the embedded associations of popular culture's imagery. The figure in each work represents a gender identity that exists in opposition to the cultural debris surrounding it. It is this conflict between the constructed environment and objects inhabiting it that drives the work. | |||||||
