Formative Assessment Workshop:
Feedback to Facilitate Learning
December 01, 2009
Tuesday, 6-9pm
Admin 303; BP John Bldg.
Free & open all Marylhurst Univeristy faculty
The workshop will be led by Melanie Booth, Ed.D., director of Marylhurst's Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment.
The process of doing work, getting feedback on it, and using that feedback to improve performance is the process of formative assessment.
In this interactive workshop, participants will reflect on techniques of providing feedback on students' writing-based work to foster students' cognitive development, writing improvement, and personal growth.
Specifically, participants will:
- Consider feedback-related formative assessment techniques that provide information about students' learning to instructors AND that support students in the ongoing development and improvement of their writing/thinking capacities.
- Reflect on current contexts and practices for providing students with feedback on their written work.
- Discuss theoretical models and practical techniques for providing feedback -- including tips and tricks for saving time and getting the biggest bang for the feedback buck.
- Experience hands-on practice in facilitating the development of students' thinking capacities and writing skills through the formative assessment + feedback process
