Each term the Business and Leadership Department offers 1-credit professional seminars. Seminars are open to degree-seeking students for academic credit as well as non-degree students seeking professional development.

Seminar: TOPICS IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP: THE ROLE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

This course introduces the concept of emotional intelligence (the capacity to recognize, understand, value and effectively apply emotions) and its role in personal success as well as success as a leader. The course will be presented in workshop format offering opportunities for self-assessment, discussion, practice and application of lessons designed to strengthen the competencies associated with self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, social awareness, relationship building, and interpersonal influence.

This is a two-part seminar. The first part will cover the dynamics and philosophy of leadership as well as the unique relationship between leaders and followers and why this relationship is key to the growth of successful leaders. The second part of this seminar will take a look at personal and individual ethics and how a leader's worldview has the ability to shape and influence organizations and how they are run.

Effective leaders are needed in every organization. This course allows participants to identify the trends facing today’s leaders, define ethical leadership, understand the role of personality in leadership, and the difference between managing and leading. Particular emphasis will be placed on skill enhancement in the areas of communication, change management and motivation. In addition, participants will assess their own strengths as a leader and opportunities for further development.
