The Human Resources Certificate curriculum emphasizes the intricacies of leadership and culture-building as they apply to the creation and implementation of strategic human resource systems.

In five foundational courses, you’ll cover human resource basics. One-credit professional seminars ensure that you keep current with the ever-changing laws and key issues in human resources.

In this program, you will learn to:

Required Courses

ORG 300: Human Resources for the Career-minded Professional

The goal of this course is to develop an understanding of how HR affects society and business. Topics are based on current research from the Society of Human Resource Management and may include compensation, employee and labor relations, employment law, HR and globalization, HR and mergers, HR information systems, occupational health and safety, performance appraisal, recruiting, workforce planning and talent management.

ORG 344: Creating Inclusive Trust Cultures

This course explores the competitive advantage of intentionally creating an organizational culture of trust. This is not a lecture course; experiential exercises are integrated with highly interactive dialogue.

ORG 340: Organizational Development

This course is designed to assist human resource professionals in assessing and managing the factors that contribute to organizational success and to develop partnerships with their organizational leaders in planning and implementing appropriate strategies for positive change.

LAW 424: Legal Issues of Managing the Human Organization

This course exposes the student to the complex world of labor law. Recent rulings and changes in areas such as ADA, FMLA, OSHA, ERISA, EEOC and sexual harassment have profound impacts on organizations. Students will learn how successful employers proactively manage compliance, employee education and policy implementation to avoid costly litigation and penalties.

FIN 305: Small Business Accounting & Finance

FIN 341: Finance for Business Managers

Students choose the finance course that best meets their professional needs. In Small Business Accounting & Finance, emphasis is on small business record keeping from basic journaling to year-end closing and financial statement preparation. In Finance for Business Managers, students learn to interpret income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements in order to analyze and perform business evaluations.

Students choose three seminars on timely HR issues. Recent seminar offerings include:

Seminar: Leading the Triple Constraint

The Triple Constraint has become a progressive business model addressing fundamental leadership concepts. Through documented case studies, real-life examples and cutting-edge methodologies, students explore innovative ways to manage change, conflict and motivation.

Seminar: Servant-Leadership

This seminar is an introduction to servant-leadership, offering examples in companies ranging from a large airline to a retail store chain. Students will examine stories from these workplaces, differentiating servant-leadership from the traditional, more hierarchical leadership models.

Seminar: Ethical Codes of Conduct

This seminar will examine the nature and role of ethical codes of conduct in corporations and organizations. Topics include the purpose and benefit of creating a code of conduct; designing, implementing and evaluating an effective ethics program; Sarbanes-Oxley and federal sentencing guidelines; and the role of stakeholders.
