The Thing About Life Is That One Day You'll Be Dead was a New York Times bestseller. He is the author of eight previous books and has received a Guggenheim fellowship, two NEA fellowships, among other awards. He lives with his wife and daughter in Seattle, where he is a professor in the English department at the University of Washington. Since 1996 he has also been a member of the faculty in Warren Wilson College's low-residency MFA Program for Writers, in Asheville, North Carolina. His work has been translated into ten languages.
