Art:Roma
Cultural Study & Art Projects
March 29 – April 23, 2010

Study Abroad

No other city in the world can show the richness of experience in historical art and architecture, and the integration of art with architecture that Rome can provide. And, at the same time, Rome is a compact, comfortable city for those new to foreign travel.

The Art:Roma Cultural Study & Art Projects program consists of two components – academic residency in Rome and field trip excursions to historic and contemporary sites in Rome and nearby. This program is held in conjunction with the Interior Design program’s Rome experience and some programming will be shared.

During a four-week stay in Rome students may develop independent projects for credit, or utilize their Rome experience in relation to regular Spring Term Art coursework.

Students will explore Rome as well as significant places nearby. Field trips outside of Rome (e.g. Ostia Antica, Tivoli/Hadrian’s Villa, Florence) may be taken in conjunction with the Interior Design’s Rome program.

Students are not required to know the Italian language to qualify for participating in the Rome program. They will be advised on fundamentals of communication for the visitor to Rome.

This foreign study program is intended for enrolled Art majors, however other students and alumni (as well as interested Marylhurst faculty and staff) may apply on a space-available basis. Contact Paul Sutinen, Director of Art Programs.

FINANCIAL AID

To qualify for full financial aid, students are generally required to complete 12 credits.

RECOMMENDED ORIENTATION - WINTER TERM

It is recommended that Art students complete a 1-credit orientation class at Marylhurst University during Winter term 2010 in order to best participate in the Rome Program. Jeff Hartnett, the International Program Director for the Department of Art & Interior Design, will be the instructor, with guest Italian language teachers.

About the International Program Director

Jeff Hartnett has extensive experience, both in design education and in foreign study. He has taught at the University of Texas at Austin, University of Arkansas, Jilin Institute for Architecture & Civil Engineering (China), Shenzhen University (China), University of Nevada Las Vegas and Portland State University. He has traveled widely, in Mexico, East Asia and Western Europe. Professor Hartnett, working closely with the faculty and staff of the University of Arkansas Rome Center for Architecture and Humanities, will direct both the academic and non-academic components of the program.
