Reading Endorsement

Earn your reading endorsement from Marylhurst and advance your teaching career.

Marylhurst University's reading endorsement program is designed for P-12 licensed educators who are seeking specialized preparation in literacy theory and practice. It prepares teachers to assess, instruct and nurture students with reading difficulties.

It is also available as a license only to candidates with a master's degree and a teaching license. For more information, see our Education Non-degree Application instructions.

Upon completion, you will be prepared to serve as a reading specialist, instructional coach or teacher-leader at the early childhood and elementary school levels or at the middle and high school levels.

Reading Endorsement Requirements (24 crs.)

Required Courses - 14 crs.
Language & Language Development
Reading Essentials for Pre-K-5 Learners
     or Reading Essentials for Secondary Learners
Reading Assessment
Foundations of Emergent & Early Reading
Practicum: Reading Endorsement

Elective Courses - 10 crs.
Choose from the following:
Reading Essentials for Pre-K-5 Learners
     or Reading Essentials for Secondary Learners
Content-Area Vocabulary Development
Writing & Literacy in the Content Area
Elementary Literature & Nonfiction
     or Adolescent/Adult Literature & Nonfiction
Leading for Literacy
Practical Diagnosis & Intervention for Struggling Readers

Persons considering applying to the reading endorsement program may take 6 credits before admission with the permission of the Department of Education.
