After completing his education, Dan Love took a job at the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL) in San Francisco as a radiochemist. The purpose of the laboratory was to study the effects of nuclear weapon fallout and the effects of ionizing radiation on humans through animal studies. He spent seven years in basic research where he published about 20 refereed papers. He was credited with discovering an analytical radiochemical technique called radiopolarography.
For the next eight years, Love was the head of the Radiochemistry Branch. NRDL personnel were transferred to the Naval Surface Weapons Center (NSWC) near Washington, D.C. in 1968. Love spent the next 15 years as Head of the Nuclear Chemistry Branch, the Nuclear Physics Branch, and the Electromagnetic Radiation Branch. During the last four years, he was head of Basic Research for NSWC, the largest research and development lab in the world.
After retiring in 1985, he and his family moved back to Portland. Since then he has taught chemistry and physics on a full-time basis at Portland Community College, Clackamas Community College, Mt. Hood Community College, Reed College, University of Portland, and the Saturday Academy. Since 2002 he has taught general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, general physics, and Great Science Books of the 21st Century at Linfield College, Portland Campus.
