Prior Learning Assessment Program

Since the 1970s, Marylhurst has provided our undergraduate students the opportunity to earn college credit for learning they've acquired through their significant work and life experiences.

Through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process, students challenge college courses for their bachelor's degrees by demonstrating their comparable knowledge developed from experiences as diverse as employment, company-sponsored training, volunteerism, homemaking and child rearing, family and social relationships, recreation, personal interest, and independent travel and research.

Step One:

Begin by determining your potential to earn college credits for your prior learning in the Learning Assessment Workshop, the prerequisite to the PLA program.  In this workshop you will:

    • Explore the relationship between your life experiences and college-level learning
    • Clarify professional, personal and educational goals and priorities
    • Assess the time commitment required to be successful in your college pursuits
    • Discover your potential to earn college credits for your experiential learning

Step Two:

The PLA Seminar will guide you through a step-by-step method for developing your first two essay-based course challenges. You will learn how to describe, analyze and document your acquired knowledge comparable to that of the courses being challenged; develop an effective academic writing practice; and identify additional college courses for continued PLA work.

Step Three:

The Portfolio Development Workshops are sequential courses in which you continue developing PLA essays for credit evaluation, receiving guidance and feedback from peers, instructors, and evaluators.  Students typically challenge three or four college courses per Workshop.
