DSST (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests)

All standardized DSST exams are in a multiple choice format, timed at two hours, and most are administered at a computer terminal.  The exception is “Principles of Public Speaking,” which is administered by pencil/paper and has an additional recorded improvised speech component.   Most credit earned through DSST is lower division; however, there are a number of exams that carry upper-division credit.  Students who do not achieve Marylhurst’s minimum passing DSST score may retake the exam, but must wait at least 90 days from the original test date.

Transfer Credit

See the Marylhurst Credit by Examination Transfer Guide for information regarding exam passing scores, credit and requirement fulfillment.

Test Sites

Warner Pacific College, located at 2219 SE 68th Avenue in Portland, is an open testing cite for DSST exams.  Contact Sarah Brawders for information and to register:, or by phone at 503-517-1518.

Marylhurst students living outside the Portland metropolitan region may find local test sites by visiting the DSST website.

At Warner Pacific College, DSST exams cost about $110 which includes a $30 non-refundable site fee to cover the administrative costs of testing (payable at the time you register for a DSST exam), and an evaluation fee of $80, payable to DSST by credit card at the time you take the exam.

Score Reports

For Marylhurst to post the credit, an official score report must be sent by the testing agency directly to Marylhurst. It is important to designate Marylhurst as the score recipient on the test answer sheet. Marylhurst’s DSST school code is 9743.

Test score will be available to students immediately upon completing computerized exams, and will be sent to the identified school(s) generally within a few weeks.  Score reports for the non-standardized “Principles of Public Speaking” exam will generally take 6-8 weeks because of the additional time needed to score the recorded improvised speech.

Test Preparation

There are a variety of ways to prepare for DSST examinations and many are addressed in the DSST Test Taker Information Bulletin available online at
