Second Annual Irish Language Immersion Day

For Release: May 13, 2008

West Coast Book Launch of "Súil Siar"

An Irish Language Immersion Day—for fluent speakers and absolute beginners—will introduce the delights of the Irish language during courses and workshops at Marylhurst University on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration deadline is May 28, 2008. A $40 fee includes all activities and a box lunch. To register, call 360.954.5529.

"Participating instructors are experienced in teaching Irish as a second language to adults and children," said Bob Burke, Marylhurst University cultural studies faculty. "Activities, which include classes on Irish music and dance, are conducted in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere with an emphasis on conversation."

The day will conclude with the West Coast book launch of Súil Siar by Barra Ó Donnabháin. Súil Siar is a collection of 32 essays in the original Irish, edited and translated to English by Hilary Sweeney and Eibhlin Zurell. Sweeney and Zurell will attend the launch and discuss Ó Donnabháin's research and writing about politics, social studies, literature and history. Ó Donnabháin was a longtime Irish language columnist for the Irish Echo, the largest Irish American weekly newspaper. Ó Donnabháin, who recently passed away, was known for his contribution to the Irish language movement across North America.

Marylhurst University offers Irish language classes, professional certificates, graduate and undergraduate degrees including a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural & Historical Studies. Marylhurst University is located one mile south of Lake Oswego on Highway 43.
