Maintaining Relationships is Vital
as We Get Older

When asked what they worry about, members of the Keizer Salem Area Senior Center had to stop and think for a moment.
The top worry, at 63 percent, turned out to be the aches and pains that come with old age.
Jennifer Sasser, chairwoman of the Oregon Gerontological society, discussed the changes that occur as we age at a recent seminar.
It all depends on our relationships, she said. Old patterns adjoin new ones, then we hop back and forth.
"Living in the past is weighty," she said, "but living in the now is real."
To change we must accept the new, then reflect and evaluate. We should ask many questions, so that we understand the changes that come.
Empathy works better than holding onto faults, she said. We need to restore each other to fullness. Our children need to be exposed to a wide range of senior life.
Sasser emphasized that maintaining relationships is vital; affection and sexuality are important.
