Marylhurst University has deep roots in service and social justice which flow from our Catholic identity. Our commitment to service has been reanimated by our Envisioning Marylhurst themes that guide our work, particularly the first theme:
"Embrace the founding mission and values of the university, as established by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, to educate the whole person, serve the underserved, promote interfaith dialogue and engage in social action for the good of the community."
We're continually looking for ways to increase both the quality and quantity of our volunteer activities in the community to build a strong and sustainable culture of community service throughout our campus. Visit our university ministry and service blog or contact us to learn more about our commitment to community service and how to get involved.
The university's Office of Mission Integration has developed a program for all members of our community who wish to directly serve people in need. We have partnered with several local agencies and can match the needs of the agency to the interests of a volunteer. Participants in the service program will be invited to a quarterly celebration where they can share the joys and struggles of direct service.
Our office also coordinates donation collections and group work parties which allow all members of the university community to participate in community service.

Service learning is part of students' academic plans. They apply, integrate and deepen their academic learning while addressing real community needs.
Please consult your department chair for information about service learning opportunities within your academic program.
Internships are designed to expand the depth and breadth of students' learning in their particular areas of study. An internship allows you to receive credit for applying the theories you learn in the classroom to specific experiences in the community. A successful internship also can give you valuable information in making decisions about the direction of your future studies or employment. Please contact our Office of Career Services for more information about internships.
Marylhurst partners with many organizations to provide rich service learning opportunities to our students and volunteer opportunities to our entire campus community. Our community partners include:

Clackamas Women's Services, providing Clackamas County's only two emergency shelters and crisis lines for victims of domestic and sexual violence
Marysville Elementary School, serving families below the poverty level, many of whom speak English as a second language
Macdonald Center, supporting the "invisible poor" who live alone in low-income housing in Portland
Oregon Food Bank, distributor of donated food to nonprofit hunger relief agencies in Oregon
